Why it matters

Why local SEO matters for family mediators

Most people only look for a mediator once, and usually under pressure. They search for a MIAM before a court application, for help agreeing child arrangements or for a way to sort out finances without going to court, and they want to know quickly that you are accredited, how much it costs and whether they qualify for help.

People increasingly ask AI assistants questions like “do I have to go to mediation before court?” or “how do I find an accredited family mediator near me?”. Those tools rely on clear, consistent information about your accreditation, the services you offer and how sessions work.

We help your service appear for those searches with an optimised Google profile, consistent directory listings, calm and accurate content about mediation and funding, and hand-built links from relevant local, family and legal websites.

SEO for family mediators: your questions

Will the content be accurate and in keeping with mediation standards?

Yes. We write in a calm, neutral and non-pressured tone, and you review everything before it goes live. We describe your accreditation, services and funding options accurately, and we never suggest that mediation guarantees an agreement, a particular outcome or a quicker result than it can. Your content should sit comfortably with the FMC Code of Practice and your member body’s guidance, and advertising in the UK must also follow the CAP Code.

We also keep in mind that mediators are impartial. Content that reads as though you are on one person’s side can put off the other party before they have even made contact.

How do you handle reviews?

Carefully. Separation is private, and a public review can reveal more than a client intends. We never ask you to pressure clients for reviews, and we never write or arrange reviews on anyone’s behalf. If a client chooses to leave one, any reply should be short and should never confirm details of their case. Trust usually comes from other signals: your accreditation shown clearly, honest information about fees and funding, and mentions from referrers and reputable local organisations.

I mediate online or rent rooms by the hour. Can I have a Google profile?

Google Business Profiles are for businesses that meet clients in person during their stated hours, so an online-only service isn’t eligible. If you see clients at your own office during set hours, that address may be eligible. Renting a room by the hour in someone else’s premises needs checking against Google’s guidelines, because ongoing services at a location you don’t own or have the authority to represent are excluded. Online mediators can still build strong visibility through their website, the FMC register, directories and AI search. Services with several offices or venues usually suit the Authority plan.

How long until more people find my service?

Tidying your profile, FMC register entry and directory listings can start to help within a few weeks. Being shown higher on the map and suggested by AI assistants for MIAM searches takes longer, usually three to six months depending on how many mediators and national services cover your area. Enquiries often rise after Christmas and the summer holidays, so it is worth starting well before then.

If my caseload or circumstances change, am I committed for a fixed term?

No. Your plan runs a month at a time, and you can end it by cancelling ahead of your next billing date. The Google profile, directory entries and links we have put in place for your mediation service remain yours.

How should a mediator present FMC accreditation and other training?

In England and Wales, the clearest signal is FMC accreditation. An FMC Accredited Mediator (FMCA) has completed approved training and had a portfolio of supervised work assessed, and only accredited mediators can sign the court form confirming that someone has attended a MIAM. Show your status exactly as it appears on the FMC register, and name your member body.

If you hold a Legal Aid Agency contract, are qualified for child-inclusive mediation or have other specialist training, say so plainly. In Scotland, the relevant accreditation is through Relationships Scotland or the Law Society of Scotland.

Should I publish my fees and explain funding?

Usually, yes. Clear prices for a MIAM and for joint sessions, what is included and how costs are usually shared help people decide before they make contact. Many people are also unsure whether they can get help, so a short, accurate explanation of legal aid and, in England and Wales, the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme can make the first step much easier. Funding rules can change, so keep that page up to date.

Beyond SEO, how do family mediators build referrals?

Family solicitors are the most important source for many mediators, because they advise clients about MIAMs and non-court options. Citizens Advice, local family support services, children’s centres, separated parent programmes, financial advisers and accountants can also point people your way.

Be clear with referrers about what you offer, your availability, how funding works and how quickly you can usually see someone. A reliable, prompt service for the people they send you is what keeps referrals coming.

What content works best on a family mediation website?

Plain-English pages that answer the questions people are afraid to ask: what happens at a MIAM, whether they have to sit in the same room as their ex-partner, whether agreements are legally binding, what happens if mediation doesn’t work and how children can be involved. Explaining the April 2024 court rule changes, which put more emphasis on trying non-court options, is also useful. Keep everything accurate, neutral and reviewed regularly.
